Job Summary:

This role works across West’s product portfolio (components, containment, and device products) with cross-functional teams to ensure success with West’s commercial and in-development products.   The Technical Product Development (TPD) team will work closely with Research & Development, Product Management, Integrated Marketing and Scientific Communications to ensure West’s products are appropriately tested and characterized, and that necessary technical documentation and collateral is made available for engagements with West’s customers.  Through the use of scientific understanding and data, the role is ultimately accountable for generating the technical strategy and execution plans to drive more value into products and services both commercially available and in-development.


Must possess project management skills, strategic thinking, knowledge of market technical requirements, process innovation skills and the ability to deliver on imperatives with successful, measured outcomes.  Additionally, be able to successfully manage multiple product development programs.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ownership of technical and scientific market facing collateral plan for new products and current growth products in alignment with Product Management directives.
  • Prioritize based on most critical growth products, competitive differentiation, and customer value.
    • Includes product claims, sustainment, and head-to-head comparisons
    • Develops study framework and owns oversight of study deliverables  
    • Clear tie to product launch, brand claims and scientific positioning
    • Work with external partners and resources to supplement work
  • Technical contributor and owner of documentation for development projects with platforms, derivatives, and continuous improvements.    
    • Accountable for building technical inputs into Customer Requirements Documents (CRD) with Product Management and working with cross-functional team to translate into Product Requirements Documents (PRD).
    • Accountable end-to-end for customer facing documentation including claims data and performance reports, design control summaries, product recommendations for handling, fill-finish/assembly instructions, specifications, formulation/product characteristics, certifications, and regulatory statements.  
    • Ensures scientists and engineers create scientifically and commercially sound standard product assessments and corresponding documentation during development thru commercialization.   
    • Be the commercial technical point of contact to manage alpha / beta customer testing with key customers under agreed terms and conditions that allows West access to data.
  • Support West’s global network as a “lead” for at least one West leading technology or service and/or pharmaceutical industry related technology or process, while concurrently continuing to develop into a subject matter expert. 
  • Understand the complex interactions between market dynamics, technical needs of the drug product and user application, existing and emerging regulations, customer expectations, as well as key product drivers. 
    • Capture unmet customer needs for West data gaps as trended by Technical Services/Sales and translate into plan to develop standard documentation packages for priority products.  
  • Strong product knowledge, development process, design controls and industry standards, and apply to product/topic areas.
  • Support the screening of external commercial facing scientific publications, articles, posters, and presentations.
  • Proactively develop knowledge of industry publications, scientific trends, and standards, ensure West scientific approach meets market expectations, and apply to study requirements.  


Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's in technical area i.e., biology, chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, etc.
  • Experience: 5+ years in B2B markets or the pharmaceutical industry requiring a high degree of technical and scientific knowledge, brand selling and understanding of regulatory requirements
  • Demonstrated increasing levels responsibility in Technical, Scientific, and Commercial structure development.
  • Highly competent in technical writing and publication


Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Masters or Ph.D. coupled with 4+ years technical experience and business acumen.
  • Strong knowledge of injectable drugs, containers, devices, and administration technologies.
  • Ability to analyze complex, abstract issues in a logical, structured way.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with all levels in the organization
  • Analytical mind with a problem-solving aptitude
  • Ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced & complex environment with a self-motivated work ethic; utilize sound judgment with an ability to manage multiple priorities with a sense of urgency


Travel Requirements:

  • Must be able to travel up to 20% of the time.

  • Must be able to work in a sedentary work environment
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, make quick decisions, interpret data, read & write, speak in front of groups, express & exchange ideas, understand direction and adhere to procedures
