Diversity & Inclusion

We strive to create and maintain a workplace rich with diverse people, talent and ideas to deliver on our promise of a healthier world

"We are in the business of helping our customers bring new medicines and treatments that advance life– for people of every background, race and belief. Our mission is an important reminder that we must continue to listen and learn from one another with safe and inclusive environments to create the path to a better future."

    - Eric Green, CEO

A diverse and dedicated global workforce, bringing together unique perspectives and varied experiences, is critical to our success. With more than 8,000 team members contributing to West’s daily innovation and business performance, we are fortunate to have a broad spectrum of team members from all walks of life and backgrounds. Our strong belief in a culture of mutual respect celebrates differences — and similarities — among all stakeholders, both inside and outside our walls.

     – 2019 Annual Report

Our commitment to Diversity and Inclusion is ongoing. We have made great strides in the diversity of our leadership across the organization:

  • Three out of the twelve members of West’s Executive Leadership Team (over 35%) are women and/or U.S. minorities.
  • The population of senior leaders who are U.S. minorities has grown by more than 10% since 2017.
  • Our Board of Directors is over 25% women.

We are also committed to recruiting and retaining diverse team members at all levels:  Today,

  • 45% of our U.S. workforce comes from minority backgrounds, compared to 37% in 2017
  • 37% of our global team members are female.

While we are proud of the progress we have made, we recognize that there is more to be done and continue our work to increase the diversity of the West team and make sure that our talented members want to stay here. We have:

  • Embed diversity and inclusion as a guiding principle in how we recruit, hire, and develop our team member
  • Enable Self-ID so that team members can confidentially share how they define themselves
  • Offer learning opportunities to help managers and team members develop the mindset and skills necessary to actively live our values and contribute to our inclusive culture.
  • Provide a more flexible work environment to help retain our global team members as they build and support their families.

Supporting Equality through West Giving

West has donated more than $1 million since 2017 to 40+ charities supporting our underserved communities from cradle to college, ensuring access to those most at risk and investing in the process with our community partners. These funds have helped our community partners by:

Providing legal representation to people illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced or abused in prisons. Providing re-entry assistance to formerly incarcerated people

Helping students not only attend college, but thrive, graduate and become leaders

Preparing African American and Latino students develop their academic and social skills to be successful in college and careers

Advancing educational equity for underserved students

  • Multinational Organization Supporting an Inclusive Culture (MOSAIC)

Dedicated to embracing multiculturalism and internationalism of all team members.

  • Veterans & Allies Leading for Organizational Results (VALOR)

Focused on helping veterans achieve their full potential at West.

  • Women’s Initiatives Network (WIN)

EBRG which has continued to expand and develop leadership opportunities for both women and men at West, with active chapters in the United States, Brazil, Singapore, Germany, France and Ireland.

  • Employee Business Resource Groups

Last but not least, West team members have the opportunity to join Employee Business Resource Groups (EBRGs) that spark connections across our global sites and cultivate career growth.

We strongly encourage our team members to engage in continuous learning, and we provide development opportunities and build talent from within. We are proud to offer resources like our online Learning Management System, in-person and virtual trainings and tuition reimbursement to our team members. In 2019, several initiatives were implemented to support development of our One West Team:

Extended access to West’s online performance management process for all production    employees.

Increased virtual classroom offerings.

Continued our focus on training and developing our managers globally.

We are passionate about our work because we can share our varied perspectives on complex challenges as we work towards a healthier world. We understand that diversity leads to greater innovation, more opportunities, better access to talent and stronger business performance on a global basis.
