Job Summary:

The Senior Manager of External Communications is responsible for developing, leading and executing proactive external communication strategies and programs aligned to the Company’s long-term commercial goals.  This role will provide support to the Commercial Organization with marketing communications, advertising, public relations and social media content.  The Senior Manager will also support the promotion of the Company’s R&D innovations as well as content and messaging of the Company’s Website:

The Senior Manager of External  Communications will report directly to the Director, External Global Communications, and work alongside their colleagues within Communications, Commercial, and other functions to help to drive and position West as a leader in the industry and a promote West’s products and services to customers and external stakeholders alike.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


Business Partnership and Support

  • Support the Commercial organizations and to provide strategic communications counsel and support for both internal and external communication needs.
  • Partner with the Marketing functions in Commercial to develops integrated, strategic marketing communication campaigns (including public relations and paid advertising opportunities) to position West as a leader in the industry, to drive future sales
  • Support commercial leaders by producing and executing on communication plans related to customer communications needs.
  • Mentor junior members of the Global Communications Team
  • Perform other duties as needed, based on business need


Content development:

  • In partnership with stakeholders and channel owners, manage the creation and production of content that is timely, relevant, engaging and builds West’s reputation in the industry as an innovator and solutions provider to the healthcare industry
  • Seek and apply innovative ideas and creative ways to tell stories.
  • Work closely with members of the external communication team to grow, reach and engagement across all channels.
  • Ensure accuracy and quality of communication products.


Media Relations:

  • Build and manage effective media relations that helps to achieve profile-raising and strategic goals.
  • In collaboration with West’s PR agency, develop and execute a global media relations strategy.
  • Write and edit press materials, develop key messaging for subject matter experts and prepare them for interviews.
  • Partner with R&D subject matter experts to develop innovation messaging/stories and plan potential media outreach.
  • Align storytelling across West channels to maximize reach and impact of media placements.
  • Ensure accuracy and quality of all media relations products, including news releases and talking points.
  • Monitor, measure and report success of media relations activities


Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications (PR), Marketing Communications or Journalism
  • 11+ years of relevant communications experience with track record of increasing responsibilities
  • Top tier writing skills
  • Management of strategic PR and internal communications programs in partnership with integrated marketing programs
  • Ability to remain focused, connected and driven in a remote working environment
  • Budget management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Able to comply with the company’s safety policy at all times
  • Able to comply with the company’s quality policy at all times


Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with digital marketing and social media engagement
  • Experience managing a PR agency and other external vendors and their associated budgets
  • Experience in Microsoft Office 365 and SharePoint
  • Proficient in a variety of Adobe Creative Suite tools (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, etc.)
  • Experience with digital marketing and social media engagement
  • Experience in designing corporate materials
