Job Summary:

As a leading member of Research and Development (R&D), the Sr. Scientist, R&D, Sterilization Technology provides subject matter expertise and vision in the identification and development of sterilization technologies for traditional and combination health care products. The successful candidate will have a background in engineering and microbiological principles as it relates to sterilization, including experience assessing and deploying novel sterilization methods and technologies or deploying traditional technologies in new ways. This role will lead the identification and selection of appropriate sterilization technologies and support of sterilization validation efforts for products to assure the sterilization process is robust and compliant with regulations, standards and company policies and procedures.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as technical leader and subject matter expert for the development of sterilization processes supporting early-stage product development and technology scouting projects.
  • Promote innovation through research-based and data-driven identification viable sterilization technologies for next generation drug / therapy containment and delivery systems.
  • Support market growth initiatives through creatively and thoughtfully challenging status-quo in sterilization process deployment to provide unique and appropriately scaled solutions to routine & novel sterilization challenges.
  • Author research reports, design experiments, and execute feasibility studies to assess efficacy of sterilization processes in a given application and/or impact of sterilization on a medical device and/or drug product.
  • Generate empirical evidence supporting sterilization validation efforts in accordance with international standards (e.g., ISO 11137, ISO 11135, etc.), international regulations, and industry best practice.
  • Lead and support cross-functional teams in test plan execution, data analysis, and conclusion generation within the product development process for sterilization technology projects.
  • Train and mentor teams, including junior personnel, while sharing experience and best practices related to sterilization technologies, regulatory requirements, and corporate policy.
  • Lead initiatives on behalf of the Global Sterilization Council and foster an environment based upon a foundation of continuous process improvement and industry benchmarking.
  • Promote West’s mission and values through active leadership and participation in the international community, including engagement in international standard committees and trade groups.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on business needs.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in in physical sciences, such as Microbiology, Biomedical Engineering or related engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in health care product development and validation of sterilization processes.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Practical knowledge of sterilization principles and prior education or experience with health care product design and/or manufacturing processes, microbiological test methods, validation. Experience with X-Ray, UV, NO2, or H202 sterilization a plus.
  • Previous leadership / mentorship experience a plus
  • Must have effective problem-solving abilities and strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral)
  • Must be dependable, detail oriented, and able to multi-task
  • A sense of urgency/initiative


Travel Requirements:

  • Must be able to travel up to 10% of the time to West facilities, suppliers, and customers for project support/coordination.


Physical & Mental Requirements:

  • Standard office environment; extensive use of computers and telephone.
  • Requires at times the carrying of up to twenty-five (25) pounds of equipment/materials.
  • Communication, coordination, hand-eye coordination skills. Visual discrimination, up-close, far, 3-dimensional, peripheral, color scheme.
  • Applies judgment to resolve routine situations.
  • Write clear and neat information.
  • Performs calculations and must be able to utilize calculator and personal computer.
  • Frequent comparison and analysis of data against requirements. Must have foresight and planning abilities in order to achieve the required objectives
