SummaryReport to the Product Development (R&D) Lab Manager, the Lab Engineer will assist the development team with test sample builds, perform engineering, verification testing activities, product sustainability, and have responsibilities associated with running and maintaining a laboratory, equipment calibrations, preventative maintenance, and equipment qualifications. The individual will bring excellent analytical, technical, hands on and organizational talent to the execution of development projects at West Dublin, West Israel, and other West global sites. This will include the successful execution of activities relating to the testing of new and proprietary medical devices from concept phase through feasibility and development phases and then on to successful completion of verification and validation testing in qualification phase to confirm all design requirements have been met before transfer to manufacturing. Actively participate with the R&D team in the ideation process to identify new product opportunities for West in existing or adjacent product or technology spaces becoming an integral member of the product development team.  



  • Education or equivalent experience: undergraduate engineering degree or equivalent
  • Experience in medical device development and testing of medical devices
  • At least 5-10years’ experience in a similar role & in a product development environment with hands on technical experience
  • Experienced background working in high volume production environment including Quality Lot Release Testing would be a distinct advantage
  • Experience in medical device design, prototypes, development, and manufacture with an emphasis on handheld medical devices is desirable
  • Experience in writing, executing, and reviewing protocols and reports
  • Experience working with external labs and testing environments for example Transportation Simulation and Environmental/Cyclic Testing
  • Experience in life cycle management, product, and equipment sustainment
  • Good Laboratory Practice, Analytical & statistical experience


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Duties to liaise with Product Design, Validation & Verification and Analytical Engineers to achieve project goals
  • Duties to perform and document engineering and verification testing activities under the supervision of the Product Development Manager for a product (or product family)
  • Duties to assist the engineering team in the development of test methods, work instructions, and other documentation as required
  • Duties to liaise with other West Development Laboratories to align on Global ESOP’s lab practices
  • Responsibility for raising purchase orders and dealing with invoices/payment for suppliers
  • Responsibility for the management of materials and consumable stock related to lab testing and programs
  • Responsibility to actively participate in daily/weekly calls/meetings with the ability to lead, communicate and update; ability to become a lead engineer for programs and project management of programs
  • Responsibility to have a thorough understanding of relevant quality system and accreditation requirements
  • Responsibility to have knowledge of relevant ISO standards
  • Responsibility for dealing with customers and clients and meeting deadlines
  • Responsible for ensuring Lab equipment, Lab SOP’s according to Lab performance needs and Global ESOP’s are adhered to
  • Responsibility for Gauge R&R and qualification of engineering test fixtures, assembly fixtures, Test Method development & Test Method Validation, Laboratory notebooks, Engineering Studies, EVT, DVT, and bringing products from concept to market
  • Responsible for the day to day operations of the laboratory, ensuring samples are processed accurately, promptly, and efficiently within a controlled environment for testing
  • Responsibility to design/development of fixtures & tooling, test method, test method validation
  • Responsible for developing test programs for tensile, compression and torsion testing equipment is a distinct advantage
  • Responsible for maintaining high standards of compliance with Health and Safety, Quality System and Proprietary/Customer requirements
  • Needs to be an active hands on person to work in the Testing Laboratory with the R&D and product development team.
  • Needs to be well-organized and methodical with high level of proficiency in 3D CAD, 3D printing & prototyping, MiniTab, MS Office suite including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook and Lab relevant analysis and simulation software tools
  • Capable of working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to trouble shoot and problem solve
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required
