Job Summary:

In this role, you will set and operate 5-axis CNC milling machines in the production of electrodes for manufacture and repair of elastomer, plastic moulds and other tooling components.

You will demonstrate a proactive mindset for process development, assist in increasing automation and utilisation of equipment, support and contribute to Lean Sigma programs and activities, whilst supporting colleagues, Section Leaders and Managers to meet quality, delivery and cost objectives.

You will comply with the company’s safety, environmental and quality policies at all times.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Set & Operate High-Speed CNC milling machines (5 axis)
  • Manage database for automated operation of multiple machine tools
  • Modification of existing programs through Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software
  • Flexibility of operation and monitoring of the overall complex EDM cell in elastomer & plastic mould production to support wider team
  • Provide training for new setter/operators on HSM
  • Flexibility to return after hours to meet critical production requirements
  • Initiative to manage self and HSM tools independently but co-ordinated with production requirements
  • Ensure maximum OEE through effective prioritisation and use of automation
  • Create inspection & report files plus utilise various measuring equipment to ensure product conformity
  • Comply with all corporate and local site Health & Safety, Environmental and Quality policies, procedures and regulations
  • Comply with all machine instructions and ensure proper use of equipment and assets
  • Comply with all process work instructions, control plans, maintenance and safety schedules
  • Read, understand & interpret Engineering drawings correctly
  • Act in accordance with the Company’s Code of Conduct and Guiding Principles
  • Report any near miss accidents, incidents or HSE irregularities
  • Ensure that your work area(s) are always kept clean and tidy
  • Ensure your PPE is used and maintained correctly
  • Demonstrate a proactive mindset for process development
  • Ensure maximum OEE through effective prioritisation and use of automation
  • Support and contribute to Lean Sigma programs and activities
  • Support the business in meeting all quality, delivery and cost objectives
  • Report issues, problems or irregularities beyond your control to the appropriate person
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications: 


  • Required: Formal engineering apprenticeship to NVQ3 level (or C&G equivalent)
  • Desirable: Formal engineering apprenticeship to HNC level (or C&G equivalent)


Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Required:
    • Extensive experience in setting & operation of CNC Milling machines
    • Extensive experience in automated machine tools and database management
    • Experienced and conversant PC user
    • Familiarity and experience of use of measuring equipment
    • Familiarity and experience of interpreting Engineering drawings
    • Demonstrated knowledge of modern cutting tools, techniques and electrode materials


  • Desirable:
    • Experience in setting & operation of Multi-Axis, High-Speed, CNC Milling machines
    • Experienced in graphite electrode manufacture
    • Experienced in Heidenhain machine tool controls
    • Experienced in CMM (Co-Ordinate Measuring Machine) operation
    • Experienced in elastomer mould, plastic mould and press-tool manufacture
    • Experienced in conventional toolroom machinery (mills, lathes, surface grinders)
    • Knowledge of other toolroom machinery (cylindrical grinders, EDM, WEDM)
    • Experience of “Lean Manufacturing” techniques
    • Experienced in Offline programming & part verification
