As a Principal Factory Intelligence Engineer within the Global Engineering team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping West Pharmaceutical’s factories of the future. This role blends technical depth, systems thinking, and digital transformation leadership to enhance competitiveness, accelerate speed to scale, and unlock new levels of operational efficiency across our global network.

 

You will lead and support initiatives that integrate forward‑looking technologies, strengthen global collaboration, and deliver insights that enhance processes, resolve complex manufacturing challenges, and advance a culture of continuous improvement.

 

Additionally, you will support factory launches and capacity expansions by driving capital equipment projects, implementing new manufacturing technologies, and leading process optimization initiatives across multiple sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, refine, and execute factory intelligence and digital transformation roadmaps, ensuring alignment across global sites and functions.
  • Research emerging manufacturing and digital technologies, build compelling business cases, and recommend strategic deployment paths.
  • Define technical requirements for new applications and systems, including automated equipment, control systems, data collection and analytics platforms, and network/integration architectures.
  • Design and oversee implementation of centralized data collection systems, partnering with cross‑functional teams to enable real‑time visuals, automated notifications, reporting, and advanced analytics.
  • Lead implementation of new equipment and systems, including project management, acceptance testing, characterization studies, validation (IQ/OQ/PQ), and operational readiness.
  • Promote a culture that embraces system-driven solutions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or other technical discipline required.
  • Master's Degree in Engineering or other technical discipline preferred.

Work Experience

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in high‑volume manufacturing environments.
  • Strong understanding of end‑to‑end manufacturing processes, including operations, quality, validation, maintenance, and supply chain.
  • Experience in an operations‑based engineering role (e.g., process owner or SME accountable for machine or process performance).
  • Hands‑on experience troubleshooting, repairing, and optimizing automated equipment.
  • Experience writing technical requirements and leading capital equipment projects from concept through qualification.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating new equipment, performing acceptance testing, and executing validation activities.
  • Proficiency in data analytics, SPC, and predictive modeling methodologies.
  • Experience with IIoT devices, connectivity, data acquisition, SCADA systems, and industrial network architecture.
  • Experience leading Lean Six Sigma initiatives and delivering measurable improvements.
  • Strong executive‑level presentation skills with the ability to influence stakeholders and drive transformation.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in medical device or other regulated manufacturing industries.
  • Experience in consulting or roles focused on operational efficiency and/or technology strategy.
  • Experience with simulation software and Digital Twin environments.
  • Experience programming, troubleshooting, and optimizing PLC‑based equipment, HMIs, robots, and automated vision systems.
  • Experience with programming languages (e.g., Python, C++, VBA), communication protocols (e.g., OPC‑UA, APIs, EtherNet/IP), and database structures (e.g., SQL).

License and Certifications

  • Six Sigma Black Belt certification preferred.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.

Travel Requirements

30%: Up to 78 business days per year

Physical Requirements

Sedentary-Exerting up to 10lbs/4kgs of force occasionally, and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.
