Job Summary
To manage the engineering team to ensure that all plant equipment is fit for purpose and the business can achieve its manufacturing requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- The job holder is aware of all relevant SOPs as per company policy that pertain to the position covered by this job description.
- Manage the engineering team in accordance with company policies and procedures.
- Maintaining equipment and services by supervising and carrying out as required, planned maintenance, breakdown repair and improvements to all plant equipment.
- Ensuring that the monitoring of upgrades and replacements is carried out using appropriate project management tools and delivered to time, cost and quality.
- To manage capital, revenue and improvement projects to time cost and quality.
- Manage track and record work on the maintenance management system.
- Responsible for analysing and reporting department performance

- To manage and liaise with contractors
- Ensure legislative compliance with all aspects of work undertaken by the department.
- To support the Engineering Manager in developing Health and Safety management systems for the Engineering Dept.
- Undertake continuous improvement through the use of lean sigma tools.
Health, Safety & Environment
As Supervisor in Engineering, you have the following HSE Responsibilities:
- Lead by example and get involved to ensure the implementation of the Safety Leadership Statement within their respected area of responsibility and to maintain its on-going effectiveness. Involvement includes allocation of time, budget, staffing, training, priority setting, accountability, visibility and follow up etc.
- Hold the area (departmental) responsibility for safety, health, and welfare at work of employees, visitors, and contractor. It is his/her responsibility to ensure that appropriate resources are made available to work safely on site. This will form part of the periodic management review.
- Ensure West’s Foundational Safety programs are established, implemented, and followed within the area of responsibility.
- Ensure that employees are not subject to retaliation if they report safety issues within the site or raise concerns through West’s Compliance and Ethics Helpline.
- Establish comprehensive Safety Objectives/Goals/Targets/Plans, which are documented, measured, and communicated and which are consistent with the site targets. Assess the risks to workers and ensure the necessary protective measures are in place. Special protection must be given to employees who may be particularly sensitive to possible risks and dangers in the workplace (e.g., pregnant women, disabled persons, etc.).
- Compliance with safety precautions and procedures that apply to their department, including the regulating of contractors within their areas.
- Ensure that staff are given adequate information, training, instructions, and supervision to perform their job safely.
- Ensure that all new hires are properly inducted into the organization, which must include an awareness of all precautions and procedures applicable to the job, manual handling training and emergency procedures.
- Ensure that no person is permitted to work on machinery or hazardous task unless they have been properly and fully instructed.
- Ensure that all staff are aware of the location of all emergency response equipment.
Health, Safety & Environment
- Communicate safety matters to the relevant groups. Implementing recommendations made by safety audits, risk assessments etc. in a timely manner. Concerns of staff are treated openly and consistently.
- Supervise and enforce compliance with personal protective equipment.
- Ensure job tasks with a high potential for ergonomic risk are assessed and evaluated. Ensure the prescribed manual handling practices, the ergonomic aids are used and other mitigation measures (e.g., job rotation and daily warm-up exercises) are applied.
- Ensure mechanical and electrical safety is reviewed periodically.
- Ensure that any building or maintenance work complies with the requirements of regulations.
Responsibilities
- Take reasonable care for their own safety, health and welfare and that of any other person, who may be affected by his/her acts or omissions while at work.
- Work in a safe manner and stay alert, in order to avoid injury to themselves or other employees and avoid damage to the company’s equipment and property.
- Follow all safety rules and requirements and provide feedback to co-workers working unsafely.
- Use any personal protective equipment or clothing, suitable appliance, equipment or other means for securing his/her safety, health and welfare while at work.
- They shall not perform a job that for they were not trained to perform and they shall inform their supervisor in this case.
- Partner with management on all the provisions taken by West to ensure the safety, health and welfare of its employees.
- SEE-DO-SAY Something: Respond to unsafe conditions, unsafe acts and near misses. Apply mitigation measures, and report to supervisor.
- Stop Think Act: Discuss problems openly with colleagues and leaders before taking action in a non-routine situation.
- Employees will not intentionally or recklessly interfere with or misuse any appliance, protective clothing, equipment or other means provided.
- Each employee will attend and follow training required by West.
- Employees shall not be under the influence of intoxicating substances such as alcohol or drugs and inform their supervisor of a disease, illness or prescribed medication that may add to risk.

Qualifications
Minimum
- HNC in Engineering - Electrical
- IEE 17th Edition
Desirable
- Experience in six sigma, TPM, SMED and lean tools.
- HND/Degree in an engineering discipline
- JOSH - Managing safely
Competencies I Authorities
- Experience of carrying out engineering in a manufacturing environment
- Hands on engineering skills in both a mechanical and electrical disciplines
- Experience in supervising/managing a team of engineers
- Competent and experienced in carrying out planned preventative maintenance and reactive maintenance on programmable logic controls
- Project management experience
- Knowledge of Health and Safety and Environmental working practices
