Job Summary
In this role, you will be liaising with the Area Manager to ensure that Production and Quality Targets are met in accordance with the Production Plan and Product Specifications. You will be responsible for ensuring all relevent Technical queries within the department are resolved and actioned accordingly.
The post holder would also be responsible for ensuring the set-up and operation of CNC milling machines and Surface Grinders in the manufacture and repair of elastomer & plastic moulds, press-tools and other tooling components. In addition, developing and maintaining control of Technical Procedures relating to the relevant Milling Operations.
Lead and champion Lean Sigma programs and activities, whilst supporting the Management Team to meet delivery and cost objectives. You would also be responsible for Training members of the Team and Mentoring, whilst sharing best practices with less experienced colleagues.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Set & Operate CNC milling machines (3, 4 & 5 axis)
- Set & Operate CNC/NC surface grinders
- Liaise with cutting tool suppliers to drive continous improvement through optimal cutting tools and strategies as well as developing custom carbide form cutting tools.
- Liaise with the CAD/CAM team to develop and control CNC Programs and be to manipulate CNC Programs for machine optimization
- Comply with all corporate and local site Health & Safety, Environmental and Quality policies, procedures and regulations
- Compile accurate SOI’s in order to provide clear process instruction to ensure proper use of equipment and assets and optimum product quality
- Responsible for developing appropriate and relevant control plans, maintenance and safety schedules
- Read, understand & be able to challenge Engineering drawings in consultation with the CAD/CAM Department
- Act in accordance with the Company’s Code of Conduct and Guiding Principles
- Report and resolve any near miss accidents, incidents or HSE irregularities and prevent future occurrences
- Carry out HSE and Workplace Inspections
- Ensure that the Milling Area is kept clean, tidy and organized in order to provide a good working environment
- Ensure your PPE is used and maintained correctly
- Demonstrate and use a proactive mindset in order to actively develop processes to increase automation and utilization of equipment
- Ensure maximum machine efficiency through effective prioritization and use of machine automation
- Responsible for leading and championing Lean Sigma programs and activities
- Responsible for driving the Department to support the business in meeting all quality, delivery and cost objectives
- Actively resolve reported issues, problems or irregularities within your area of control and escalate matters where required via the LDMS escalation process
- Support the Area Manager with work scheduling
- Deputise for the MTD Milling Technical Lead as appropriate
- Deputise for the Area Manager as appropriate
Education
Basic Qualifications:

- Required: Formal engineering apprenticeship to NVQ3 level/City and Guilds or equivalent relevant work experience
- Desirable: Higher National Certificate in Engineering Discipline

- Extensive experience in setting, programming & operation of CNC equipment
- Extensive experience of use of measuring equipment
- Extensive experience of interpreting Engineering drawings
- Extensive experience of modern cutting tools and techniques, cutting tool design and machining strategies.
- Experience in conventional toolroom machinery (mills, lathes, surface grinders)
- Experienced and conversant PC user
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Desirable:
- Experience in Fanuc machine tool controls
- Experience in multi-axis machine tools
- Experience using solid carbide form cutting tools.
- Experience in elastomer mould, plastic mould and press-tool manufacture
- Knowledge of other toolroom machinery (cylindrical grinders, EDM, WEDM)
- Experience in automation processes & database managed machine tools
- Experience of “Lean Manufacturing” techniques
- Experienced in Offline programming & part verification
