Job Summary:
Reports to the site Health, Safety and Environmental Manager to support on the planning and implementation of environmental health and safety programs by developing and maintaining a comprehensive occupational safety program for the facility including safety inspections, participate on incident investigations, develop and provide HSE training and perform related tasks as assigned. The HSE Specialist will help ensure conformity to applicable federal, state, and local standards related to environmental compliance and occupational health and safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Guide and promote employee health and safety performance by assisting on developing health and safety systems, programs and procedures to prevent occupational injuries and illnesses, and enhance the overall site safety culture resulting in management engagement, employee involvement and the reduction in unsafe conditions and behaviors.-
- Participate on incident investigations to guide on finding root causes and identifying aligned long-term corrective actions.
- Perform facility audits, surveys, and inspections to identify environmental, safety and occupational hazards and weaknesses, to promote effective practices and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and develop recommendations that provide solutions, remedies or process improvement.
- Participates, review and approves risk assessments such as: job safety analysis, new processes, new chemicals, and personal protective equipment assessments.
- Support all chemical and hazardous waste management, including transportation and documentation.
- Train/Educate employees on how to prevent health problems using safety training programs
- Monitor contractor activities to ensure compliance with West Safety Policies.
- Participate on projects for new equipment or improvement as safety representative.
- Contributes to and/or plans and executes HSE, Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility (CR) related projects. Develops and reports on project objectives. Manages project resources such as manpower, financials, and other relevant factors.
- Recommend changes to protect workers.
- Maintain communication with all levels of the organization to ensure that safety and training guidelines are being followed
- Provides a “Customer Service” attitude when interacting with internal and external customers while accomplishing work, production, and achieving quality standards
- Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe workstation and environment at all times.
- Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s – Occupational Safety, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene or related field.
- Experience: 3-5 years
- Related experience in a manufacturing or pharma environment.
- OSHA General Industry Certificate or equivalent preferred.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must have knowledge of OSHA, Federal, State and local safety laws and regulations.
- Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports and required documentation
- Possess strong ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employees and managers at all levels of the organization
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

- Ability to work irregular hours on occasion to support 24/7 operation
- Ability to communicate with all levels of employees
- Ability to evaluate and ensure proper use and maintenance of PPE

- Competent in the Microsoft Office Suite of products (Word, Outlook, Excel).
- Able to comply with the company’s safety policy at all times
- Able to comply with the company’s quality policy at all times.
