Job Summary:

In this role you will lead the Water Engineering element of the Global Facility Engineering team while supporting the team in project engineering & project management. Water Engineering includes, but is not limited to, the following Water Systems: potable water, softened water, de-ionized water, reverse-osmosis water, purified water, water-for-injection, clean steam, and process wastewater streams. It does not include black utilities and foul wastewater. You shall support the Global Facility Engineering Network and provide consistent technical engineering support and guidance to global facilities to achieve corporate goals which relate to quality, efficiency, cost reduction, safety, and wellbeing. The scope of this role is global and thus can be located at any major West site. Preferred locations are US Exton, PA; Germany, Eschweiler; and Waterford, Ireland.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Global Facility Engineering Network in establishing and providing consistent technical engineering support and guidance to the global facilities in all areas relating to Water Engineering to achieve corporate goals which relate to quality, efficiency, cost reduction, safety, and wellbeing.
  • Lead, develop and drive standardization and harmonization of existing & new global facilities. 
  • Implement standards for new projects with a focus on, and ownership of, Water Systems.
  • Develop and maintain West engineering guidelines for Water Systems which provide guidance on quality, investment, and efficiency.
  • Work closely and proactively with Operations, Process Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and HSE teams to develop facility engineering solutions.
  • Execute projects assigned to you in accordance with Global Facility Engineering’s defined Project Execution Strategy.
  • Provide consistent technical support to global sites by being the subject matter expert for Water Systems in the Global Facility Engineering team.
  • Ensure, through consultation with and support of local site engineering teams, that cGMP aspects, current technical standards, local regulations and safety standards are applied to Water Systems.
  • Ensure, through consultation and support of local site engineering teams, that there are sufficient preventative and corrective maintenance procedures in place for safe operation of all new Water Systems at handover. Support the improvement of preventative and corrective maintenance procedures for existing Water Systems.
  • Establish the engineering expectations for facility projects by communicating the requirements of West engineering guidelines and establishing clear basis of design documentation.
  • Take an active part in the evaluation and selection of external partners such as engineering consultants and building contractors. Collaborate with, and support the management of, external consultants and contractors in projects to ensure that project tasks and deliverables are being achieved.
  • Provide project input regarding current best practices based on industry standards, cGMP, compliance requirements, working knowledge and practical experience.
  • Be capable of taking the lead in new projects for all disciplines including design reviews, commissioning reviews, operation reviews, and perform constructability analysis during the design phase in close alignment with our external engineering partners and plant engineering teams.
  • Develop and lead engineering document reviews for equipment, facility and utilities and support Project Execution, Vendor Development, including URS, FS, DQ, FAT, FAT, IQ, OQ, and PQ documents.
  • Leadership of Water System commissioning and qualification activities as required.
  • Leadership of Water System continuous improvement projects and initiatives as required.
  • Ensure, through consultation with and support of local site engineering teams, global facilities can operate as efficiently as possible to minimise their impact on the environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree, Masters degree or equivalent in Engineering or Science
  • 10 years’ of experience in design/construction/operation in Pharmaceutical or Medical Device industry or Clean Utilities industry

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Deep knowledge and understanding of design and construction, operation and maintenance of Water Systems including generation and distribution systems and equipment.
  • Detailed engineering knowledge of US Pharmacopeia and other pharmacopeias relating to Water Systems with the ability to assert technical solutions and standards in an international environment.
  • Good knowledge of current energy conservation practices.
  • Strong engineering and troubleshooting skills relating to Facility Engineering and Water Systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and ability to think strategically.
  • Strong project management and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to drive change and to think outside the box.
  • Ability to facilitate project delivery through international teams.

Travel Requirements:

  • Must be able to travel up to 30% of the time, globally.

 

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Sedentary - exerting up to 10lbs/4kgs of force occasionally, and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to life, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.  Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
  • Mental requirements include ability to communicate effectively and with a global team in a matrix-environment balancing multiple stakeholders.
