Position Summary:
Reports to the site Health, Safety and Environmental Manager to support on the planning and implementation of environmental health and safety programs by developing and maintaining a comprehensive occupational safety program for the facility including safety inspections, participate on incident investigations, develop, and provide HSE training and perform related tasks as assigned. The HSE Specialist will help ensure conformity to applicable federal, state, and local standards related to environmental compliance and occupational health and safety.
Accountabilities:
- Guide and promote site’s health, safety, and environment performance by assisting on developing health and safety systems, programs and procedures to prevent occupational injuries and illnesses, and enhance the overall site HSE culture resulting in management engagement, employee involvement and the reduction in unsafe conditions and behaviors.
- Participate in incident investigations to guide on finding root causes and identifying aligned short-term and long-term corrective actions.
- Participate and lead facility audits, surveys, and inspections to identify health, safety and environmental hazards and opportunities, to promote effective practices and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and develop recommendations that provide solutions, remedies, or process improvement.
- Participates, review and approves risk assessments such as: Job Safety Analysis, new processes, new chemicals, and personal protective equipment.
- Support all chemical and hazardous waste management, including transportation, inspections, training, and documentation.
- Conduct HSE related training for employee including regulatory training, West required training and job specify HSE training.
- Participate on projects improvement as HSE representative, including HSE Management of Change.
- Gather date, process information, and generate for various HSE regulatory requirements in a timely fashion, including but not limited to Air permit, stormwater, Tier II, TRI, OSHA logs.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or related science discipline.
- Possess strong ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employees and managers at all levels of the organization
- Manufacturing or similar experience
- Experience in developing and implementing health, safety and environmental programs and monitoring performance
- Knowledge of applicable EPA, OSHA, RCRA, Air Quality, and other safety and environmental regulations
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to train
- Strong planning and organizational skills
- Analytical problem solving
- Demonstrated initiative and innovation
- Knowledge of computer and software skills an asset
- Experience: 3-5 years
- Direct/Indirect Reports: Indirect reports possible (safety committee, internal auditors)
Physical Requirements & Travel Requirements:
- Minimal-moderate. Perform job duties as required with limited physical demands and some travel may be required at times.
