Job Summary:

Reporting directly of the Associate General Counsel, VP Legal, EU & APAC this role is responsible for coordinating day-to-day legal matters and business advice in the Asia Pacific region. In collaboration with the global Legal and Compliance Departments, counsel, advise and support the company’s wider organization in the conduct of its business in the region and implements necessary internal policies and procedures to assure that the company conducts its business in compliance with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations in the region. Provides legal and risk mitigation advice. Responsible for foreseeing and protecting the company against risks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead Legal Business Partner to Asia Pacific management team on all legal matters including general corporate, commercial transactions and disputes, investigations, litigation and employment.
  • Coordinate advice as required within the region to Associate General Counsel, VP Legal EU & APAC, to the Law and the Compliance Departments.
  • Supports Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Compliance, and all other global functions with legal activities within the region.
  • Uses project management skills to increase productivity, drive simplicity in legal and business operations and streamline processes.
  • Develop education and training on relevant issues that can be delivered through various media and to all levels of employees.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 10 years of experience within relevant field (healthcare, MedTech, pharmaceutical, commercial contracts)
  • In-depth knowledge of best legal practices and business-legal strategies
  • Work experience in and general knowledge of both common law and civil law as applied in the Asia Pacific region
  • Significant experience with complex commercial transactions 
  • Significant experience in general commercial and corporate law firm as a practicing lawyer (at least five (5) years) or a corporate law setting at a company in a highly regulated environment representing pharma, medical devices, MedTech, healthcare, chemical and/or technology clients.

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Fluency in English and Mandarin is essential; knowledge of at least one other Asian language preferred.
  • Ability to analyze complex legal issues.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with a high ability to influence and negotiate.
  • Proven ability to work effectively under extreme time pressures and demanding clients.
  • Licensed attorney in good standing (where required locally)
  • Excellent contract drafting skills; both common and civil law contract drafting skills and experience required.
  • Experience with goods and services agreements procurement, agency and distribution agreements, Asia Pacific anti-trust, competition law, data privacy protection and protection of intellectual property
  • Understands how to work across the Asia Pacific geographic region using working knowledge of different countries and cultures.
  • Proven experience in handling a high volume of activity involving multiple, often complex projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrate professional & culturally sensitive work ethic.
  • Experience in managing legal resources and/or external resources.
  • Proactive, hands-on approach identifying areas for improvement, problem solving skills combined with a positive outlook.
  • Communicates effectively and persuasively, both verbally and in writing
  • Manages time and resources effectively through strong organization, multi-tasking, delegation, time management and project management skills.
  • Identifies and suggests strategies to mitigate risks pragmatically.
  • Negotiates skillfully, anticipating reactions and planning strategically to overcome objections.

 

Travel Requirements:

  • Must be able to travel up to 30% of the time throughout the region.

 

Physical & Mental Requirements:

  • Must be able to work in a sedentary work environment.
  • Must be available to work across various time zones to support client needs
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, speak in front of groups, express & exchange ideas and understand direction. 
  • Maintain the ability to work well with others in a variety of situations.
  • Able to multi-task, work under time constraints, problem solve, and prioritize.
