Job Summary:

In this role, you will provide project support for the development of new packaging, products, and technologies. Contribute to development of new packaging designs for the packaging of primary pharmaceutical containers, and novel electronic drug delivery systems (medical devices).  Contribute to the selection of materials, create specifications, and manage tasks associated with the development of unique and functional packaging that enhances and preserves the value of West’s products. Perform packaging process development activities and equipment setup as appropriate in laboratory and production environment following all appropriate cGMP and company policies and procedures.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical packaging support for customer Development Agreements, including the design, development and testing of device components and end-user packaging.
  • Execute tasks for packaging life-cycle management projects and contribute to R&D activities that will allow the achievement of project goals and objectives. 
  • Participate in planning and execution of packaging design verification activities and support process validation activities as required, including sample preparation and testing.
  • Author test protocols, reports, and risk analysis (FMEAs) to support and maintain Design History File (DHF).
  • Design and conduct experiments to verify package performance and integrity.
  • Coordinate packaging testing activities for engineering studies and protocols through internal and external packaging laboratories.
  • Apply project management techniques to coordinate tasks assigned for key projects within budget and schedule constraints.
  • Identify equipment needs to support packaging development and execute installation, setup, and qualification efforts.  Develop test methods for evaluation and validation of packaging design.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure compliance with industry and government regulations.
  • Support operations in developing packaging procedures and providing training to production personnel.
  • Provide post-commercialization packaging support to West plants / customers to sustain current business.
  • Maintain awareness of technology trends through literature, trade shows, and intellectual property.
  • Able to comply with the company’s safety policy at all times.

 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Packaging, Materials, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in package engineering or related role.

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • 5 years’ experience in a packaging engineering role
  • Experience working in a pharmaceutical or medical device environment with sterile barrier systems.
  • Strong technical writing abilities
  • Understand of fundamental engineering principles and prior experience with packaging design, materials, good manufacturing processes (GMP), sterilization processes, and test methodology
  • Experience with UDI labeling systems and testing.
  • Effective problem-solving abilities and strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to be aware of all relevant standard operating procedures as per Company policy as they are related to the position covered by this Job Description

 

Travel Requirements:

  • Must be able to travel up to 10% of the time

 

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Must be able to occasionally lift product boxes (up to 25 lbs.) for sample preparation
