Job Summary:

 

The Director, R&D, Industrial Hardware sets strategic direction for the global industrial hardware team. Formulates, plans & executes completion of projects to targeted timelines and commitments. Ensures hardware programs remain on track, scope is managed, and quality work product is delivered by the team. Works independently and has expert level capabilities and knowledge. Oversees hardware designs for next generation IOT edge devices including carrier board design, other data acquisition and special purpose processing systems for real time computing use cases.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Works with R&D Advanced Engineering Programs to convert high-level initiative objectives into realizable goals leading to fully functional prototypes that comply with all applicable best practices and standards.
  • Aligns with R&D Applied Research leadership on future needs to ensure robust pipeline and capacity to deliver their objectives.
  • Works with R&D Advanced Technology Program Director to establish project priorities and milestone timelines.
  • Coordinates resource allocation and constraints with functional managers, program director and collaborate with stakeholders to establish project priorities and timelines.
  • Establish close communications with vendors in the electronics and components space.
  • Build global organization with redundancy and scale to meet an ever-increasing workload.
  • Hire, retain, build, mentor, train, and support team members to unlock their capabilities and accomplish the team’s priorities.
  • Exhibit extensive thought leadership in designing sophisticated embedded systems.
  • Lead with out of the box, innovative, and strategic thinking in an ever-changing fast pasted environment.
  • Drive execution for hardware projects and POCs through clear accountability and ownership to complete them in an expedient manner.
  • Apply expert level understanding to the complete product lifecycle of hardware design from requirements, hardware design document, design level block diagrams, power estimation, circuit design, simulation, component selection, Schematic Capture, Layout Analysis and Design, Validation of Layout & Gerber, Test report, Risk Analysis, and PCB Fabrication.
  • Develop and execute strategy for component sourcing to mitigate global shortage conditions and keep projects on-track using best practices and personal experience.
  • Manage relationships with new and existing third-party PCB fabrication and assembly houses to understand capabilities and gain alignment to our priorities and scheduling needs.
  • Using knowledge and expertise, solves unique and complex issues, recommends architecture and processes, recommends changes to existing architecture and processes, and also exceptions to architecture, technology, and process standards globally.
  • Utilizes knowledge and experience to test components using various lab equipment.
  • Keep abreast of new technologies for review and possible inclusion in designs.
  • Establishes best practices for hardware design.
  • Establishes component sourcing strategy to ensure designs are not held up by shortages.
  • Aligns team on designing hardware in a modular way.
  • Ensure team designs with corporate ESG (environment, social, governance) in mind.
  • Identifies and removes or escalates obstacles that are hindering the team from making progress.
  • Coaches team members for their career development and provides feedback for constant improvement.
  • Pushes the team to think parallel activities instead of sequential to accelerate progress.
  • Drives development of abstract and critical thinking in the team.
  • Ensures the team is collaborating across the enterprise, across various groups, and fosters a high-performance environment.
  • Drives adoption of DevOps within the team by influence and change management. Creates trainings/guidance to give view into staffing and ongoing project status in close coordination with the program director.
  • Drives an agile mindset in the team where through quick, constant feedback and iteration we can make measurable progress and alter path if needed as soon as possible.
  • Oversees resource (people, equipment) allocation to projects in alignment with prioritization according to organizational goals and objectives. Adapts resource allocation to ever changing conditions and demands.
  • Possesses expert level knowledge of the complete product life cycle of Hardware system design from requirements, design document, design level block diagrams, ongoing review.
  • Expert level knowledge of Creating and Understanding Design Requirements, Reviewing Circuits, Component evaluation, Schematic Reading, Layout Analysis and Design, Validation of Layout & Gerber, Test report, Risk Analysis and Integration.
  • Shows extensive thought leadership in designing the future embedding systems, biomedical engineering and development associated with data acquisition and processing devices on SOC (system of a chip) architecture.
  • Actively facilitates a culture where innovation is encouraged at all levels of the organization.
  • Builds, trains, and supports team members to enable their capabilities and realize objectives.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with the team and business to ensure collaboration and alignment within and outside of the R&D function.
  • Presents and updates the progress of various objectives to top management with facts and justifications.
  • Using knowledge and expertise, solves unique and complex issues, recommends architecture and processes, recommends changes to existing architecture and processes, and exceptions to architecture, technology, and process standards globally.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Education and Experience:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree with specialization in Electrical / Mechatronics / Biomedical
  • Minimum 10-12 years of related work experience

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Champion with safety practices like DFMEA, FMEA and DRBFM
  • Through understanding of standards like ISO13485, ISO 26262, etc.
  • Extensive hands on PoC activities utilizing System on a Chip (SOC) boards, COTS development boards, designing solutions and building products including carrier board designs using Multicore MPUs/MCUs, FPGA, ASIC.
  • Strong knowledge in various Development Boards, Components Engineering, EDA Tools in the market.
  • Strong knowledge of BLE, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, UART, SPI, I2C, CAN and USB etc. with design skills at component level.
  • Ability to work in a virtual environment in a global organization and to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with high flexibility and rapid response time
  • Ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced & complex environment with a self-motivated work ethic; utilize sound judgment with an ability to manage multiple priorities with a sense of urgency
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment in making decisions and resolving complex problems related to general & technical aspects of the job. Decisions made with in-depth understanding and interpretation of procedures, policies and business practices to achieve results.
  • Able to be aware of all relevant SOPs as per company policy as they are related to the position covered by this Job Description.
  • Able to comply with the company’s safety and quality policies at all times.
