Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Sr. Manager, HSE - Exton HQ and Global Labs, the Sr. Specialist, HSE - BioSafety provides hands-on support to the Radnor Advanced Research Laboratory and consultative biosafety support to global laboratories.


The Sr. Specialist - BioSafety is responsible for maintaining PPE, first aid supplies, biohazardous waste supplies, and other safety-related supplies at the Radnor Advanced Research Laboratories.  This role will also maintain autoclave certification and inspect safety showers, eyewash, and emergency equipment.


This role is also responsible for the maintenance and execution of training and guidance on biosafety issues, assists in conducting hazard and risk analysis, and collaborates with the Manager, Laboratory Safety and Sr. Specialist, EU Laboratories in maintaining laboratory safety programs. This role operates within biosafety programs as required under federal, state and local regulations and NIH guidelines and will serve on the Corporate Institutional Biological Committee (IBC).



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Procures and maintains stock of PPE, waste supplies, first aid supplies and other safety-related supplies.
  • Removes biohazardous waste from the laboratory and coordinates removal with hazardous waste and regulated medical waste vendor.
  • Maintains autoclave certification, and performs inspections of safety showers, eyewash, and emergency equipment.
  • Review and approve Standard Operating Procedures for biological hazards.
  • Inspection of BSL-2 laboratories upon IBC approvals.
  • Provides technical guidance on BSL-2 laboratory design based on proposed research activities
  • Serve as back-up to providing General Laboratory and OSHA Safety Compliance/Training
  • Develop, and present multiple biosafety training topics including bloodborne pathogens, sharps safety, use of biosafety cabinets, personal protective equipment, and management of biological agents and waste.
  • Respond to safety incidents/emergencies (after hours as needed).
  • Investigate and analyze safety incidents, near-miss event.
  • Add biosafety content to HSE web page
  • Participate in biosafety aspects of lab commissioning/decommissioning, (e.g. training, waste disposal, equipment decontamination, and safety inspection/clearance)
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations, consensus standards and guidelines including but not limited to OSHA, EPA, IFC, NFPA, DOT, IATA, ANSI, CDC, and NIH.
  • Knowledge of basic Biosafety principles.
  • Work with laboratory leaders and researchers to develop, review and approve Job Hazard Analysis, Standard Operating Procedures and protocols detailing all aspects of proposed research activities that involve biohazardous materials.
  • Maintain the company’s biosafety manual.



Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, related discipline or Occupational Safety and Health.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a biological laboratory safety professional role or biology research-focused role.
  • Strong Communicator with the ability to work with all levels and different cultures within the organization.
  • Team player.
  • Self-organized, reliable and results oriented working style.
  • Excellent Communication skills (written/oral).



Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to learn basic webpage content management software.
  • Ability to lift 35lbs
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
