Job Summary:

The Applied Research & Technology Scouting (AR&TS) team within West is responsible for driving the future of the company by identifying and developing innovative products designed to improve patient lives.  This objective will be accomplished through a mix of internal organic research and external inorganic collaboration.  The inorganic effort will span early-stage academic research to more established technologies in the private sector.  The inorganic effort will seed the organic efforts.  The scope encompasses technology fields that are adjacent to and transformational to West’s core products. 

The role will work within the recently established Diagnostic Research & Detection Technology team to identify and evaluate technologies and concepts in a broadly defined BioSensor space.  The team’s output will feed the development of new products and serve new markets.  The timeline for realization of the products is within a 5-year time horizon.  Internal to West this team will collaborate with teams focused on drug delivery and novel therapies.  External to West the team will be interfacing with researchers from academic institutions translating potential value-adding technologies, through feasibility and into reality.  Projects will focus on technology validation and integration.  This will require the planning and performing of experiments, designing test equipment and prototypes, and integrating different principles of optical, mechanical, and electronic engineering.

Amongst the many research avenues of interest to West is the exploration of advanced biometric sensor technologies, and their potential integration into next generation drug delivery devices.  Suitable candidates will be expected to bring a depth of expertise, knowledge of current developments in both research and industry, and will make a significant contribution to the I&T Team and the future of West.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to complex research projects across several technologies and a variety of project formats, from short-term student internships, through to feasibility projects and long-term collaborations.
  • Execute experimental plans and project proposals to evaluate different technologies and test hypotheses.
  • Provide detailed requirements for prototypes and test rigs to validate technologies and work with other team members and/or directing third party vendors to get these built as required.
  • Specify design requirements needed to establish key performance criteria to meet project goals of demonstrating feasibility of a new technology.
  • Contribute to a Knowledge Base by reviewing “state of the art” technologies, tracking publications in relevant fields, identifying, and highlighting prolific academic researchers and keeping organization informed of research and industry developments.
  • Evaluate and solve complex technical challenges that arise on both internal and external projects. Gather and provide new perspectives and arrive at solutions based on pooling multiple sources of information.
  • Solve problems using own judgement supplemented by the team’s collective experience.
  • Analyze and evaluate test results to enable their wider dissemination.
  • Develop subject matter expertise across the micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) technology landscape.
  • Develop subject matter expertise across the micro fluidics landscape.
  • Collaborate with technical stakeholders internally within West as well as externally with research partners as needed to support project objectives.
  • Capture project outputs in appropriate format including technical reports, presentation slides, research posters, invention disclosures or as project permits.
  • Travel to scientific and research conferences to identify research findings that support West research strategies.
  • Support technology evaluations and assessment for M&A opportunities.
  • Participate as a team member on various projects within the group and perform other duties as assigned based on business needs.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelors in Scientific/Engineering discipline.   Biomedical, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, chemistry, biochemistry or equivalent.
  • Experience with MEMS and micro fluidics spanning fundamental research, manufacturing, and clinical testing.
  • Experience: 3-5 years of experience, can include time spent either in industry or post graduate school.
  • Background working in medical device or similarly regulated industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to support complex research projects either through relevant industry projects or via strong collaborative postgraduate research.
  • Willingness to learn and to independently explore new fields of research, understand nascent technologies and be able to generate research project/grant proposals with minimal guidance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and ability to articulately disseminate scientific research to a variety of different audiences, from biomedical, mechanical, electronic engineering or equivalent expert through to non-technical.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Education: Masters or PhD in a scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Expertise in designing and developing MEMS used to track biometrics and vitals (respiration, heartrate, touch, gesture identification, body motion, etc.)
  • Expertise in developing micro fluidic assays and chemical transduction.
  • Experiences in fabrication and customization of piezoelectric/electroactive mini actuators for biomedical applications including controllable valves, diaphragm, catheters, drug delivers, etc.
  • Awareness of MEMS technology leaders in industry and academia.
  • Able to be aware of all relevant SOPs as per Company policy as they are related to the position covered by this Job Description


Travel Requirements:

  • Must be able to travel domestically or internationally up to 15% of the time
