Job Summary:

In this role, you will lead and make key decisions in a dynamic environment. Your knowledge and experience will come in handy while influencing and collaborating with key partners while teaming up to make site preparations for the integration of new capital equipment and provide support for the planning of new lab design/construction. Responsibilities include oversight and scheduling of equipment maintenance and repairs, coordinating supplier/vendor relationships and partnering with scientists for the planning and integration of new technology and automation. This individual is the primary operations person to manage the lab space from a strategic operation, issue response and remediation perspective, and will be the primary collaborator with internal Safety, Scientific Staff, and Facility Operations.  This role will be onsite with flexibility to WFH at times, and will relocate in late 2022 from Exton, PA headquarters to West’s newest lab located in Radnor, PA.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interface with key stakeholders for continuous improvements related to laboratory space and capabilities.
  • Ensure proper safety procedures are in place. Ensure all lab users are properly trained and lab safety is maintained.
  • Develop new and innovative lab capabilities and techniques to meet business needs. Work closely with and partner with R&D to identify new technologies, testing techniques, and lab capabilities.
  • Ensure successful implementation of new techniques / equipment.
  • Review and approve documents such as laboratory investigations, work instructions, SOP’s, etc., as assigned.
  • Responsible for physical laboratory space at the Radnor Life Sciences Center. Refine and optimize physical lab space to best utilize the existing space for current and future needs.
  • Design and maintain schedule for equipment use, equipment calibration and maintenance, and replenishment of laboratory consumables.
  • Utilize programs such as West Digital to fulfill all internal purchasing requests.
  • Perform routine inspections to ensure that laboratory areas are operating within the safety procedures.
  • Coordinate with Quality Assurance for internal audits to ensure compliance with West Quality Management System.
  • Ensure routine and unscheduled maintenance of equipment is performed within acceptable timeframes by collaborating with external partners/organizations.
  • Act as the primary point of contact to coordinate with external vendors and project teams to maintain contracts for necessary supplies, equipment, and service.
  • Attract, recruit, develop and build capabilities of team members.
  • Inspire, coach, train, develop, motivate, and evaluate team members to ensure their capabilities and accomplish priorities.
  • Ensure team members have access to training, coaching, and mentoring to thrive in their respective roles and enhance professional development.
  • Manage cold storage, maintain department refrigerators/freezers, and ensure appropriate stocking of lab supplies within ready access for lab personnel.
  • Collaborate with D&T to manage and maintain computer and automation systems, including upgrades and issue resolution.
  • Understand or have exposure to concepts of data generation, data management, and/or big data computing.
  • Collaborate w/ scientific staff and leaders to ensure a steady and ongoing relationship with intent for efficient operation, improved automation, and process improvement of workflows.
  • Performs other duties as assigned based on business needs.
  • Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures, instruction, and all safety rules.

 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Required minimum education: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry or a related science with at least 8  years of relevant experience or a Master’s degree with 8  years of equivalent training or experience is required.
  • Required minimum experience:  8 – 10  years of experience

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Laboratory management experience covering biological, chemical, or materials science areas.
  • Leadership and mentorship qualities to provide training and guidance to lab technicians and lab engineers.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills as well as keen analytical abilities.
  • Expertise in lab safety and general lab work practices.
  • Able to comply with the company’s safety policy at all times.
  • Able to comply with the company’s quality policy at all times.

 

Travel Requirements:

  • May be required to travel up to 5% of the time.

 

Physical & Mental Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform job duties as required with limited physical demands.

 

Competencies/Authorities
