This role is within the Scientific Insights (SI) group. It supports Biologics market research and support strategy for the Biologics market unit.  It builds appropriate strategies around integrated Solutions in Biologics market.  This role will lead the studies and the research in protein and gene therapies. This is part of our effort to establish a competitive differentiation in the market and deliver key insights to the business units and customers.  The research would contribute to the development of business strategies and translate into business opportunities for Integrated Solutions.  This role requires a broader skill set to better establish thought leadership in packaging/biologic compatibility that can be associated with industrial and customers’ interest. It also entails developing collaborative approaches with customers in using our recommended strategies to help understand the impact of primary packaging on their biologic drugs. The candidate must have the ability to identify and develop the capability to meet internal needs that support these business efforts, and lead the team conducting them accordingly. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Is responsible to develop comprehensive in-house capabilities in biologics (protein, gene and etc) to support business units
  • Direct biologic research within Scientific Insights group to next level to demonstrate thought leadership
  • Lead investigations and studies to build knowledge and understanding on technical subjects relating to:
    • Biologic drug-packaging compatibility
    • Biologic drugs stabilities
  • Use technical judgment and business acumen to proactively identify new technologies and subjects in biologics that can create value for West’s business
  • Initiate and build business cases for new lab capabilities, and collaborations, internally and externally
  • Work with internal and external resources to prove technical feasibility and execute SI strategies
  • Successfully execute SI strategy in biologics and participate in West’s internal biologics teams as needed
  • Promote, present and actively participate in growing West’s business and show thought leadership:   
    • Identify and define technical subjects for presentation and publication to position West as a recognized thought leader.
    • Develop and author posters & podium presentations for professional societies
    • Prepare technical manuscripts for publications
    • Educate the industry and customers with scientific insights & knowledge on product applications
    • Provide technical information to support the preparation of educational materials on product applications 
  • Develop training materials and train the junior level scientists in West on scientific knowledge and product applications in areas of expertise
  • As a technical advisor, lead and consult on technical aspects for product launches, new products, formula development and other projects based on area of expertise, customer needs and market segment
  • Develop areas of expertise in West based on education background and the business needs over and above the internal trainings
  • Network and influence through active participation on industry working group or conference planning committee
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on business needs, including:

    • Maintain well-organized documentation. 
    • Promote a safe work environment, including all safety rules.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in a required technical field with 10+ or Master’s with 15+ years of experience in biologic drug research and development fields
  • Demonstrated record of success in biologic drug research and development fields

  • Demonstrated scientific record of success, including technical proficiency, problem-solving, and personal accountability
  • Able to comply with the company’s safety policy at all times
  • Able to comply with the company’s quality policy at all times


Travel Requirements

  • Must be able to travel up to 10% of the time 


Physical & Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to comprehend technical information, and analyze it
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects with sound judgment and a sense of urgency 
  • Ability to play a technical leadership role, as well as a hands-on scientist role when needed.
  • Ability to lead a team and work as part of a team but also autonomously in a fast-paced & complex environment with a self-motivated work ethic
  • Work in an lab/office combination environment. At times must sit for extended periods of time
