The Director of External Global Communications is responsible for developing and executing a strategic, proactive and integrated global communications plan aligned to the Company’s long-term commercial goals. This role will support the Commercial Organization and be responsible for all marketing communications, advertising, public relations and social media for West’s Commercial functions. The Director also oversees the content, messaging and branding of the Company’s Website: www.westpharma.com


The Director of External Global Communications reports directly to the Vice President of Global Communications and Corporate Philanthropy and provides strategic communication counsel to the Senior VP of Global Market Units and Commercial Solutions, as well as the SVP of Commercial Products and Emerging Markets, and their leadership teams. The Director serves as the liaison to the rest of the Global Communications Team for any activities (e.g., employee communications; community affairs) that impact the Commercial teams.




  • Serves as a strategic business partner to the two SVPs of Commercial and their leadership teams, to promote West’s products and services to customers
  • Develops integrated, strategic marketing communication campaigns (including public relations and paid advertising opportunities) to position West as a leader in the industry, to drive future sales
  • Writes press materials and serves as a media spokesperson
  • Drives adoption of new communication channels to communicate West’s commercial messages (digital, social media, etc.) and manages content and messaging on West’s website and social media channels
  • Coaches West executives and SMEs on media interview skills & employee communications
  • Partners with the Director of Internal Communications to support the Commercial Team’s employee communication needs
  • Drives strategy to partner with Customers’ PR & Marketing Communication teams for co-promotion opportunities; including announcement of any market development agreements to showcase new business opportunities
  • Provides guidance on the latest trends in marketing communications and public relations in a B2B healthcare environment and drive best practice in West’s marketing communications
  • Maintains the Company branding guidelines in all internal and corporate communication creation
  • Develops measurement criteria and processes that effectively evaluate internal and corporate communications programs
  • Ensures proper corporate review and approval of all internal and corporate communication assets
  • Ensures a consistent global experience for stakeholders, and implement appropriate localization/translation strategies in partnership with local and regional West teams
  • Directs PR and corporate communications outside agencies and associated budgets
  • Performs other duties as assigned according to business need
  • Manage 1-2 direct reports




  • Education or Equivalent Experience: Bachelor's in Communications (PR), Marketing Communications or Journalism
  • Experience: 10+ years of experience
  • Management roles with increasing responsibility
  • Management of strategic PR and Marketing Communication programs in partnership with integrated marketing programs
  • Global Communications experience
  • Ability to work within a matrixed global organization
  • Executive communication experience
  • Top-tier media relations skills
  • Experience in partnering with Investor Relations
  • Event Management experience
  • Budget management skills
  • Crisis management experience
  • Experience managing a PR and/or advertising agency and associated budget



  • Experience in Social Content Management Platforms (such as Sprout Social / HootSuite, etc.)
  • Experience in Web Content Management Systems (Sitecore, etc.)
  • Experience in Microsoft Office 365 and SharePoint
  • Proficient in a variety of Adobe Creative Suite tools (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)
