Position Summary:


As Packaging Engineer in our Research & Development Team, you will plan, organize and lead projects to support the development and qualification of sterile barrier packaging that enhances and preserves the value of West’s products. In this role you will support strategic sourcing initiatives for West’s High Value Product packaging by managing technical projects and work with key suppliers to improve products and processes.

As part of our packaging team, you will specify, test and validate new and improved packaging systems closely working in multidisciplinary and international groups with facility engineering, process engineering, procurement, quality assurance.


Your Duties and Responsibilities:

  • You will drive R&D activities for various engineering projects to achieve project goals and objectives through the implementation of new and/or improved packaging designs and processes
  • You will plan and execute sterile barrier packaging design verification and process validation activities
  • Besides performing gap assessments and evaluating risks with introducing new packaging, you will develop actionable plans to mitigate those risks
  • You will create and optimize packaging diagrams, site level procedures, conduct design reviews and author reports in compliance with West’s Product Development Process
  • In our GMP environment, you will take care for a compliant technical/scientific documentation in writing protocols, reports and other documents
  • To reduce waste and improve efficiency, you will identify opportunities for continuous improvement in West’s commercial packaging and implement plans
  • You will act as a technical point of contact for strategic suppliers of packaging material
  • Commonly with the product development team and cross-functional work streams you will maintain planned project milestones


Your Qualifications:

  • You have at least a bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering, with a minimum of 3-5 years professional experience a proven track record of projects led within international, cross-functional teams. You have a proven understanding of fundamental engineering principles and with a passion for working with new, materials, manufacturing processes, test methodologies
  • You are keen to learn and become acquainted with new technologies and processes
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical processes, and familiarity with pharmaceutical standards (cGMP) strongly desired
  • With your effective problem-solving ability and strong interpersonal skills, you will manage complex projects quickly
  • Knowledge about irradiation sterilization would be a plus
  • As you work with international teams you should have excellent English knowledge both written and spoken. German language knowledge is advantageous
