Job Summary:

The Director, HSE for Global Containment has end-to-end accountability for the global HSE program – currently across 16 sites, more than 7,000 production team members. The role will be accountable for ensuring the right systems, tools, and processes are in place to meet and/or exceed the immediate and future goals for West Global Containment Operations. This role will work closely with the Head of Operations, Global Containment and their leadership team, to build a strategic HSE plan that integrates with the overall corporate HSE strategy and helps ensure West protects employees while delivering business results. As the key HSE leader for a global segment, this role will also bring together the enablement functions within HSE – talent, learning & development, talent attraction, total rewards, HSE operations – leveraging the broader expertise within West to help build and sustain a high-performance workforce and safety-first culture.


The Director, HSE for Global Containment will act as a strategic advisor to the Head of Operations, supporting leadership development, decision-making to deliver HSE strategies in alignment with the company’s objectives and targets.  With a solid understanding of global manufacturing risk, processes, and applicable regulations this role to be the consistent strategic voice and thought leader, pushing the team to consider new and innovative ways to deliver improved HSE performance.  The role will be measured on HSE KPIs along with the implementation of best-in-class programs to help ensure a high-performance team and program that can predictably drive strong results, even when experiencing challenges associated with high growth rates, uncertainty, change and evolving regulatory landscapes.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Act as a strategic partner to VP, Operations, Containment and value-stream leaders, providing them with decision-making support and guidance.   
  • Act as single point of contact for all aspects of HSE related to Global Containment Operations, delivering HSE solutions that support talent and organizational imperatives.
  • Bring together a best-in-class team of experts across the HSE function, both directly and indirectly, to support the programs, tools, and processes associated with the workforce. 
  • In conjunction with the Vice President of HSE, develop a structured and transparent Global HSE strategy which brings to life West´s corporate values, the Business Conduct principles and the HSE Policies.
  • Lead the implementation of the Corporate HSE strategy in alignment with West´s global operations strategy. 
  • Facilitate, monitor and measure HSE tactical execution through the value-streams.
  • Manage and provide leadership to the value-stream HSE leaders.
  • Advise the management in all relevant fields of HSE.
  • Lead, and participate in, global network of West HSE professionals
  • Advise, consult, coach direct and support HSE leaders within the value-streams.
  • Work closely with other functions to maximize achievement through a cooperative environment.
  • Apply judgment to data insights, analytics and trends to support business decisions that drive organizational effectiveness.
  • Take a leadership role in creating a respectful and inclusive work environment while role-modeling West’s values.
  • Develop, implement, interpret and monitor HSE policies, procedures and programs for effectiveness and continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a change champion, helping disseminate/interpret necessary communication, information and updates to client groups.
  • Lead or contribute to HSE projects that are aligned with business needs and organizational objectives.
  • Keep current on laws/regulations and external trends, developments or activities that could impact talent, organizational effectiveness, culture and leadership development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on business needs.


Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. 
  • Minimum 12 years of relevant, progressive work experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years in HSE within a highly-matrixed environment.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive responsibilities as a manager.
  • Demonstrated success as an HSE leader in a business experiencing high rates of growth or change.
  • Deep knowledge of global workforce regulations and HSE practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships and establish position as strategic advisor.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a strategic workforce plan, organizational design, or workforce analytics report.
  • Professional certification in HSE (CSP, CIH, CHMM, etc..) highly desirable
  • Proficient in enterprise-wide software applications such as SAP, PowerBI, SharePoint, etc.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Master’s degree in HSE, Business, Engineering, Science, or related field.
  • High level of interpersonal skills, organizational skills and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a global team, communicating across geographic borders and considering management styles to address cultural needs of team.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority within a global matrix, particularly at the executive level.
  • Ability to develop presentations and storylines/business cases that effectively summarize an issue or need and garner support at the executive level independently (might be required to provide examples).
  • Work autonomously in a virtual environment, managing multiple priorities and effectively prioritizing.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent and sound judgment in making decisions and resolving complex challenges. Make decisions with in-depth understanding and interpretation of procedures, policies and business practices to achieve results.
  • Solid understanding of employee relations and disciplinary processes.
  • Ability to resolve challenges across all levels of the organization while demonstrating respect and being candid even in the most difficult situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain solid working relationships at all levels.
  • Strong customer focus by following through on commitments.
  • Support and contribute to Lean Sigma programs and activities towards delivery of the set target.


Travel Requirements:

  • Must be able to travel up to 25% of the time, including internationally.
